The kindergarten classrooms participated in a distance learning event with other schools in the state of New York. The classes read a book called Turkey Trouble, a story about a turkey that disguises himself as a other animals. After the story, the children came up with other ideas of what the turkey could be disguised as and then in the STEM lab disguised paper turkeys using craft supplies. This week they video conferenced with a another school who did the same project and played a guess the turkey 20 questions game using coordinate grids with digital images of their turkeys. The classes also taught each other about their communities. Our students were surprised to learn that the one town (Elwood) from Long Island has a splash pad park! This BOCES sponsored project helped build communication skills through a project that integrated multiple subjects. Everyone had a great time and we are planning more distance learning and pen pal activities with our new kindergarten friends from across the state!
The second graders in Mrs. Zappie's Media Class are beginning to CODE using Java blocks. Techies in the making!

On October 26, the fourth grade, along with many other districts in Western NY, participated in a virtual Buffalo Sabres NHL Future Goals STEM event sponsored by Everfi. Students were engaged in STEM themed activities via a Zoom presentation and on their Chromebooks with Everfi as part of this special event. Students learned the math, science, technology, and engineering that are needed for a career in the NHL, whether it is playing hockey or doing one of the many behind the scenes jobs. Everfi continues to support free online programs like this, that Brocton students can take advantage of at school and at home.
Everfi has a family webpage with hockey themed STEM activities that can be done at home. You can learn more by visiting this link:
