NYS Legion Boys/Girls State ONE Week Summer Program - Feb. 1

This event is free, because of the support of our Local Legion. It is sometimes a qualifier for 4 year scholarships. 1000 JUNIORS from across NY State are chosen each year to attend. Participants create a mock NYS government, complete with mayors, senators, courts, police, and reporters. Some students who want to become governor prepare speeches and campaign buttons ahead of time :-) This looks very good on applications. Two top participants each year are chosen to go on to BOYS/GIRLS NATION.

Art Studies/Musical Studies - prepare portfolio during Junior year

Most colleges will require portfolios, and degrees in musical performance will require auditions. Work on those your Junior year. That will open up more scholarship opportunities when you apply. The link below is for Fredonia's outstanding music program as an example.

ROTC Scholarships/West Point - due dates 3x a year for Junior and Senior years

ROTC are fantastic scholarships, but require applications during your Junior Year to get the best seats. 3 year full tuition are more common, but 4 year scholarships are available. To get 4 year scholarships they look for these specific things: extra-curricular activities, leadership in sports (like captain), Eagle Scout or NY Boys State participation, Valedictorian or Salutatorian, physical fitness, community service, examples of moral integrity, SAT over 1000, had a job outside of school, and took advanced courses in High School (like JCC courses).  This is not out of range of Brocton students, as one Brocton student has received this lately. The Evaluation Boards are only held 3 times a year, like Sept., Nov. and Jan. so waiting until your Senior year does not work well. The highest candidates and West Point candidates are usually chosen in Sept.
