The fourth grade completed a cross-curricular miniunit using the popular game Minecraft (the education version). Students engaged in a Minecraft world called The Mindful Knight, with medieval themed activities that had them learning about mindfulness through reading, digital journaling, and problem solving. Vocabulary instruction was also embedded in Minecraft, as well as through collaborative activities that encouraged students to think critically and make connections with the vocabulary terms. At the end of the unit, students wrote a narrative script about the Minecraft challenge and shared what they learned. Finally, they created a video using their script using an online video creation and discussion tool called Flip.

Tomorrow is P.S. I Love You Day. We are excited to see purple spread throughout our school to stand up against bullying, help end depression and ultimately end suicide. 200 schools nationwide will be participating! We are hopeful that more love, kindness and connectedness will bring our school together as a family. Don't forget to wear purple for us, wear purple for the silent battles we can't see.
Ms. Glasier and Ms. Hamlet's first grade classes participated in a cross curricular distance learning project with classrooms from Long Island. The project was themed around the book The Mitten. Each class read the book, wrote about their favorite part of the book, created their own mitten with animals craft, and chose an animal character from the book to write descriptive clues about. On January 31 and February 2, the classes video conferenced with the classes from Long Island. Every class shared a map of where they lived and taught each other about their communities. The children were amazed at how far away they were from each other even though lived in the same state. Then the classed took turns reading their favorites parts of the book. Finally, they played a guessing game where students read their animal character clues and the other class had to guess the animal. Once the animal characters were correctly guessed, the boys and girls had a chance to share their mitten and animal crafts.

We have converted Mrs. Anderson’s AIS classroom into a campground thanks to donations provided through Donors Choose. Our desks have become tents and bear caves have been constructed where we will read and work on math skills.
A lot of learning is expected to take place along with tons of fun. The focus will be on targeting and building the foundational skills that are necessary for students to become successful in reading/math. Each day overflows with hands-on learning, cooking classes, and HAPPY surprises.
The Brocton Central School District would like to wish you a Happy Groundhog Day!!
